Space Weather your Smartphone

The Space Weather Center is pleased to announce the newest update to the first space weather application for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android: version 1.8.1 of the SpaceWx App. Now it is possible to view real-time space weather data, from the Sun to the Earth, on a handheld device. You can now connect to real-time space weather applications with either a Wi-Fi or cell phone signal.

This App can be useful for broadly understanding space weather effects in:

- HF Radio communications

- GPS accuracy

- Power grids

- Aviation

These systems are affected by space weather disturbances that are visualized by this app.

You can download the SpaceWx App from the Apple iTunes store. Just search for the keywords "Weather" or "SpaceWx", or visit this Apple App Store SpaceWX link to locate the app in iTunes. The purchase price is only $1.99 USD. Also, you can soon download the app from the Android Market for free (visit the link at the bottom of this page).

With a tap on the screen you have menu selection for:

- global or regional total electron content

- solar and geomagnetic current status plots

- rotate with zoom on images

In addition, by using the web browser ability, the SpaceWx App can be used to access our GAIM products and other space weather products provided by our partners already designed for the iPhone/PDA screen.

Version 1.8.1 was released in the Apple App store in mid-August 2011. The version 1.8.1 release also marks the path for the official Android release, released in early September 2011. The update provides even more data sets and space weather information, making the total number of contributing organizations 19, providing 125 data sets.
